Human-centered design, user-centered design, interaction design--call it what you will, but when it works, empathy and creativity combine to produce an experience in which the tool disappears. My study of the cognitive sciences is deepest in the aspect of learning and understanding. If we can uncover how we learn and use what we know, we can design better school curricula, 12-step addiction-combating programs, airline cockpit controls, laptops, anything at all.
